Portantino submits Long Gun Open Carry Ban AB1527. Don’t blame Open Carry advocates ! Its a failure of our government, not of our citizens.
Well, we all knew this was coming. After the Open Carry ban on handguns was put into effect beginning January first of this year, there’s no surprise when anti-gun politicians realized they missed a spot. Enter AB1527. After all, they’re there to create new laws, not to understand existing legislation, nor to represent their constituents. Of course, that was sarcasm. Unfortunately many of my fellow citizens are just as disgusted as I am with how these imbeciles (Portantino , et a.l) are unable to comprehend basic common sense and logic. It’s like a prerequisite of being a politician is to have the inability to produce a logical train of thought. Of course there are a handful of politicians who actually do try to serve the people, but unfortunately they are among the few.
With the ranting aside, let’s see what we’ve got going on with this new proposed bill. Basically it’s to clean up yet another poorly written bill. AB144 was the ban on Unloaded Open Carrying of handguns in public, introduced by Portantino, signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown on October 10th, 2011, effective January 1st, 2012 . Of course being an expert on firearms, Portantino forgot to include long guns into his ban. The bill was so poorly written, that Portantino had to come up with another bill to finish what he started. He can’t even correctly write laws that pertain to his interests! I call this the “Oops, I missed a spot” bill.
I’ve been on the forums and I’ve been reading about the whole open carry debate from both ends. Here’s my take. Gun owners are not to blame. Not the pro-open carry citizens, nor those who do not support the movement. This is a failure with our government. Let’s face it. Yes, it is true that the open carry advocates brought this into the spotlight, allowing the public, and the politicians to see that we were able to legally carry unloaded firearms in public. But let’s face another fact. If the politicians actually did their job for once, and understood our laws, they would have realized that we had the rights to begin with, and would have tried to ban it anyways. Regardless, if the open carriers didn’t make this an issue, no one would have been exercising the right anyways, therefore it is a moot point that it is banned now. In my opinion, it opens the dialogue on gun issues and makes it apparent that we have a MAJOR flaw in the laws. Hopefully with all these new bans, existing case law will be able to be used against the state of California, enabling all citizens to have the ability to protect his/her own life, the life of their families and their property. After all, we as human beings reserve the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

I agree with the article that it is not the peoples fault that the open carry of long firearms is not working. It is the legislators that created the law that should make sure that the implementation is correct and effective.
